Golfland SunSplash, 155 W. Hampton, is generously giving the Mesa Hydration Donation campaign a one-day boost with its Water Wednesday promotion. Customers donating a case of water today at the park are receiving a General Admission pass for the price of a Junior Admission, a savings of $8.

“By donating to Water Wednesday you can have a fun day at Golfland SunSplash, help a great cause and save money,” Golfland SunSplash General Manager Tony Hacker said.

The Mesa Hydration Donation campaign, which started in 2007, provides donated supplies of water to the homeless and unsheltered during the extreme summer heat. The City of Mesa works with businesses and nonprofit agencies to provide those supplies. The water is distributed through United Food Bank to numerous nonprofit organizations in Mesa and throughout the valley including Paz de Cristo and A New Leaf-East Valley Men’s Center.

“Our residents have been generous in donating water to those in need and Water Wednesday will be a tremendous help. For less than five dollars to buy a case of water, the donation will definitely save lives over the next few months,” United Food Bank President and CEO Bob Evans said.

During a news conference at Golfland SunSplash to promote Water Wednesday, it was announced that this year’s campaign goal is a donation of 300-thousand donated bottles of water. Last year, 222,275 bottles were donated, more than double the number collected the previous year.

The Mesa Hydration Donation campaign is a stark reminder of the dangers of summer heat in Arizona, which first responders encounter on a daily basis.

“The risks of dehydration are great for anyone exposed to the triple digit temperatures, especially those who are homeless or don’t have a place to easily get out of the sun,” Mesa Fire Public Information Officer Forrest Smith said. “Without donations of water, the outcomes of our emergency responses to cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke would be much worse.”

Mesa park rangers have also taken supplies of donated water to help the homeless and others who have encountered heat emergencies in City parks.

“We have encountered people near death in 115 degree heat in the parks. Fortunately, we have been able to carry water donated during the campaign to revive them before calling firefighters and paramedics for emergency help,” Mesa Park Ranger John Goodie said.
