District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers has been appointed to the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC). Councilmember Somers, who is Vice Chair of the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Public Safety and Crime Prevention Steering Committee, will represent both the City of Mesa and the NLC on the committee.
FirstNet was created in February of 2012 as an independent authority within the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) at the U.S. Department of Commerce. FirstNet is directed to establish a single nationwide, interoperable public safety broadband network. The PSAC will play a vital role in helping establish and maintain a nationwide 700 MHz LTE system for first responders.
“As a first responder, I know first-hand the critical role communications and information play in our efforts to save people and property,” Councilmember Somers said. “I am looking forward to participating in the critical dialogue about how we can best deploy and operate the nationwide public safety broadband network for the benefit of our communities.”
The PSAC is made up of 45 members from across the United States and includes representatives from numerous public safety departments.
