District 5 Councilwoman Dina Higgins has announced her resignation from Mesa’s City Council, effective August 15. Councilwoman Higgins joined the Council in 2008 and was re-elected in 2010.
“It has been a true honor and privilege to represent the residents of District 5 for the past five years,” Councilwoman Higgins said. “I want to thank the residents in District 5 for their support and confidence in me to represent them. My experiences as a councilwoman in the City of Mesa have enriched my life beyond any of my expectations.  I have grown both professionally and personally from the many encounters with the wonderful residents. I am grateful for this opportunity and will always reflect back on my time on the Mesa City Council fondly.”
Councilwoman Higgins informed Mayor Scott Smith and the City Council of her plans by phone and followed up with a letter to the City Clerk on Tuesday. She cited the demands of her full-time job as a business development manager and the required weekly travel as reasons for her resignation.
“I’d like to thank Councilwoman Dina Higgins for her five years of service to the City of Mesa and District 5,” Mayor Scott Smith said. “I know it was a difficult decision to make and I admire her strength and commitment to do what she feels is best for her and our community. She will be missed on the dais and I wish her the best of luck.”
The City of Mesa will release information regarding the appointment to fill the temporary vacancy in the near future.
