Public input needed for environmental testing for Mesa light rail extension

Mesa, AZ – Citizen input is essential to the City of Mesa’s efforts to obtain a $400,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  This grant would fund environmental research and testing for individual parcels needed for extending light rail on Main Street from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road.  City staff will present the application, answer questions and receive input during two public meetings on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and Monday, Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Fire Station 202, 830 S. Stapley Drive.
The City of Mesa and Valley METRO have completed a comprehensive environmental assessment for the light rail extension that is part of the federal funding application process.  This EPA grant supports the efforts of extending light rail in Mesa.
EPA Brownfields Assessment Grants provide funding for developing inventories of brownfields, prioritizing sites, conducting community involvement activities, and conducting site assessments and cleanup planning related to brownfield sites, which have real or perceived contamination.  Assessment grant funds may not be used to conduct cleanups.
The City of Mesa was awarded a Brownfields Assessment Grant from the EPA in 2012, which was used to complete environmental research and testing on approximately 85 parcels that were needed for the central Mesa extension of light rail from Sycamore to Mesa Drive. As a result of this grant award, more than $380,000 was saved in the central Mesa extension project budget.
