Get Your Flu Shot - Flu season is just around the corner. Seasonal flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza flu viruses that may change and develop new strains from year to year. These flu virus spread between people and can cause mild to severe illness. The best way to reduce the chances that you will get the flu is by getting a flu shot immunization.

Where Do I Go? - Like last year, employees and their dependents who are enrolled in a City of Mesa medical plan are encouraged to get a flu shot from a Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO provider.  This could be your primary in-network care physician, or any number of regular and pop-up clinics that are in-network with BCBS and widespread throughout the valley. Samples of these clinics include:

  •   Take Care Clinics (inside many Walgreens store locations)
  •   MinuteClinics (inside many CVS store locations)
  •   The Little Clinic of Arizona
  •   Mollen Immunization Clinics
  •   Healthwaves Clinics

Benefit Coverage - Flu shots are covered as part of our preventative care benefits in each of our medical plans. As long as you use a Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) provider in Arizona flu shots are covered at 100% of the Blue Cross allowed amount. Ask before you get your flu shot if the provider is a member of the BCBS network. The in-network provider will accept your medical card and process the claim directly through BCBS.

Out of Network - If you get your flu shot from an out-of-network provider, it will not be a covered benefit under the City of Mesa medical plans. For example, flu shots done by a pharmacy such as Walgreens, Walmart, or CVS are considered out of network and not covered under our medical plans.

Example:  Walgreens Stores

  • Take Care Clinic located in the store: In Network
  • Walgreens Pharmacy: Out of Network
