Business and community partnerships enable the East Valley Institute of Technology to offer a range of premier career and technical programs to high school and adult education students. This week, an example of this will take center stage when the city of Mesa Fire and Medical Department donates a 1997 Pierce Quantum 4-door cab fire truck to EVIT’s Fire Science program.
City of Mesa, Mesa Fire and Medical Department and EVIT officials will be on hand for the donation of the fire truck from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 at EVIT’s A. Keith Crandell Campus, 1601 W. Main St., Mesa. The donation will be held by the flagpoles in the center of the campus.
“The strength of EVIT is our partnership with business and industry. Without that support, we could not deliver state-of-the-art career and technical education,” said EVIT Superintendent Sally Downey. “A fire truck is a huge expense. We could not do what we do without the City of Mesa.”
The fire truck is a 470 HP Detroit Diesel that includes a fire pump, 500 gallon water tank, 20 gallon foam tank, booster reel and deluge gun, among other features. It will be used on campus by students in the Fire Science program.
“This donation allows the EVIT students the opportunity to work with an actual fire truck that has been used by our firefighters,” said Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh, “and it gives the city the chance to help augment the education of young adults while at the same time repurposing a fire vehicle and putting city resources to good use.”
The East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) is Arizona’s first joint technological education district. It provides occupation-specific programs for high school students at ten school districts across the East Valley. The programs are tuition-free for high school students; classes also are open to adult students at competitive tuition rates. EVIT, which has been honored as an A+ school in Arizona, is located in Mesa at 1601 W. Main Street and 6625 S. Power Road.
