The 2013 Lunar New Year Festival will be held at the Mesa Amphitheatre, 263 N. Center St., on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Traditional highlights will include lion dances, firecrackers, children’s games, carnival rides, martial arts, live music, fashion show, evening concerts, and raffle prizes.

“This important holiday is an occasion for the Vietnamese people to have family reunions and friends gathering for feasting”, said Kevin Dang, the newly-elected President of the Vietnamese Community in Arizona.  “It is also a time to express respect and remembrance to the elders and ancestors.”

Also called the “Spring Festival”, the Lunar New Year is a major public holiday observed in many parts of the world.  In the United States, this holiday is widely celebrated within the Chinese and Vietnamese communities.  Customary activities of the holiday include family gatherings and offering wishes to everyone for peace, happiness, good fortune, and longevity.

As part of the fastest growing population in Arizona and with a number of approximately 30,000 people in Phoenix, the local Vietnamese community commits to hosting the Lunar New Year Festival every year with the focus to preserve and share its cultural heritage.  This annual event aims to create a fun and festive atmosphere for children and adults of all nationalities where they are invited to explore the Vietnamese culture and to promote social diversity.
