Mesa area high school and college students who are interested in pursuing a career in the field of business have the opportunity to attend a free workshop offered for students and parents on Thursday, February 21, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at One Oh One, 101 West Main Street in Mesa, AZ by Dr. F. Selcen Phelps, Chair of the Department  of Accounting, Business, Economics, and Management Information Science (ABEMIS), at Westminster College in Fulton, MO.

“Fields such as international business and related career choices such as finance, marketing, entrepreneurship and accounting are some of the most sought after degrees and are projected to be some of the fastest growing employment sectors for the future,” says Dr. Phelps.

An international business major will be offered at the Mesa campus for the fall semester, 2013.

In her workshop, Dr. Phelps will discuss significant elements of these majors, how students can build resumes and e-portfolios that boost future success, why a liberal arts education is ideal for a future business person, how business administration and entrepreneurship can be taught and what internships and job opportunities are available for these majors.

International business jobs are projected to grow from 19 percent to 41 percent over the next four years and entrepreneurship is one of the five most sought after areas of course content in the country.   Finance positions are estimated to take a 38 percent increase in available jobs.

In addition to being ABEMIS Department Chair, she is the Buckner Endowed Chair in Business and the faculty advisor for both GlobeFM, the College’s Internet radio station, and the Long Term Thinking Club.  She has taught classes at Westminster in business research, management, organization, and ethics; entrepreneurship; e-commerce; and information technology.

Currently, she is working with three Westminster seniors on research projects that design and prototype technologies to assist people with disabilities.

Dr. Phelps holds a doctorate in operations research from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and an MBA from Governors State University in University Park, IL.  She spent one year at Carnegie Mellon University on a Turkish Council of Higher Education scholarship and six months as an exchange scholar at Purdue University.

Her research interests include multicriteria decision making, metaheuristics, distance collaboration and pattern detection in communications.  She has been published in flagship journals such as Management Science, Journal of the Operational Research Society and INFORMS Journal of Computing.

Founded in 1851, Westminster College is one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation, according to the rankings of U.S.News & World Report.  The prestigious ranking system selected Westminster as 151st out of all private liberal arts colleges in America because of the highest graduation rate in the school’s history and selection by high school counselors from across the country as one of their two top picks for liberal arts colleges in Missouri.  Forbes magazine selected Westminster as one of America’s Top Colleges and Universities, one of the Best Liberal Arts College in Missouri, and one of the Best Liberal Arts Colleges in America.   The Princeton Review recently named the College as one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest for the tenth straight year.  Newsweek-Kaplan named it “One of the 372 Most Interesting Schools in America.”  This selective college for men and women operates on two campuses, one an 86-acre residential campus in Fulton, MO, and a second Southwestern urban campus in the vibrant downtown of Mesa, AZ.  Westminster is a challenging academic environment where students are educated to lead and inspired to achieve.
