Part of the City’s “Mesa Educates U” campaign, Discover U Weekend, being held March 8-9, 2013, will provide an opportunity to engage with Mesa’s new and established education institutions - A.T. Still University, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Mesa Community College, Albright College, Benedictine University, Upper Iowa University, Westminster College, and Wilkes University - while experiencing some of Mesa’s signature events and attractions.
On March 8, the institutions will participate in Mesa’s 2nd Friday Night Out monthly block party. The March theme is ThinGAMEajig, multifarious gaming event, and will feature a variety of new and vintage video game activities, a mini-tournament sponsored by the Microsoft Store, a Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament, a Board & Card Game Room, and a Gaming Themed Costume Contest. HeatSync Labs, located at 140 W. Main, will also be hosting a “Tech Talk” series from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. Wilkes University, Upper Iowa University, and Albright College are presenting on the topics “Is Entrepreneurship Relevant?”, "Flipped Classrooms”, and “Design games YOU want to play”.
On March 9, Hohokam Stadium and the Chicago Cubs will provide the backdrop for a unique event showcasing Mesa’s higher education assets. Mesa Educates U is the game day sponsor and the colleges and universities will be on hand to answer questions. Attendees will also have a chance to enter a drawing to win an education prize package including a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card and stuff to charge and protect your electronics, keep you organized, keep you cozy, keep you hydrated, and help you pay for college. Interested participants can sign up to win a pair of tickets to the Cubs spring training game on the Mesa Educates U web page or by liking Mesa Educates U on Facebook. Tickets can be purchased at www.cubs.com
As part of Discover U weekend, Westminster College will also hold a writers’ workshop on Thursday, March 7 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at One Oh One Gallery, 101 West Main Street in Mesa. Novelist and Westminster College professor Dr. Debra Brenegan will be the presenter and parents are invited to attend with their students.
