Mesa, AZ – During the week of March 11, 8th Street will officially become Rio Salado Parkway when new dual street name signs will be installed. The dual signs will prominently display the new name with a smaller 8th Street sign placed below. The dual signs will be in place for a one-year transition period. After that, the smaller 8th Street signs will be removed.
In 2011, the Mesa Grande Community Alliance proposed a name change for 8th Street to Rio Salado Parkway from Mesa city limits at the Loop 101 to Country Club Drive as part of a community revitalization strategy. After conducting public outreach, collecting community input and presenting the idea to many boards and committees the Mesa City Council approved the name change in Dec. 2012.
"The name change was a neighborhood driven idea. They envisioned unifying the area along the Salt River with Tempe," District 1 Councilmember Dave Richins said. "A unified identifying name is often the first step in creating a sense of place and Rio Salado Parkway connects Mesa and Tempe as economic sister cities.”
