Mesa, AZ – The City of Mesa is celebrating Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) by hosting an athletic shoe drive for kids. The City of Mesa is encouraging local youth to participate in GYSD by volunteering to lead and organize donation drives within their schools, clubs, churches, Boy Scout troops and neighborhoods through the months of March and April. For GYSD, the City of Mesa will be accepting donations of new or gently used closed-toe athletic shoes for kids in elementary school. Donations can be dropped off at the Mountain View High School track, 845 N. Lindsay Road, Saturday, April 27 at 9 a.m. to noon in conjunction with Hersey’s Track and Field Games.

Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world, and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth. GYSD celebrates and mobilizes the millions of young people who improve their communities each day of the year through service. This opportunity allows local youth of the City of Mesa to volunteer in helping those that do not have resources to purchase appropriate footwear to play sports in.

For more information on organizing a shoe drive, please contact the City of Mesa Neighborhood Outreach Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Alvis at (480) 644-3705 or michelle.alvis@mesaaz.gov or to register for the Global Youth Service Day visit www.gysd.org/cityofmesa/athletic school drive collection event.

Participants in Global Youth Service Day are also invited to attend Hershey’s Track and Field Games, the longest running youth program of its kind in North America.  The event is free to participate for boys and girls nine to 14 who will compete in separate divisions.  Registration is available online at www.hersheystrackandfield.com or the day of the event before 9 a.m.  City of Mesa’s Youth Sports is hosting the event and is partnering in the shoe drive to help benefit participants in any of their many sports programs.
