Mesa, AZ – A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today by Upper Iowa University (UIU) for its UIU-Mesa Center at 1361 S. Alma School Road.  The UIU-Mesa Center is a renovated vacant retail building in the Fiesta District that formerly housed Borders bookstore.  The UIU location is part of Mesa’s Higher Education Initiative, which has brought satellite campuses of several colleges and universities to the City.

"Mesa is becoming Arizona's newest college town," Mayor Scott Smith said. "The UIU-Mesa Center fills a niche in our higher education system unfilled until now. I wish them the best of success and can't wait to watch the campus grow."

Initially, UIU-Mesa will occupy 13,000 square feet in the building under a 15-year lease with the possible addition of an additional 17,000 square feet in three years.  The UIU-Mesa Center will house classrooms, a computer lab, curriculum lab, nursing classroom, offices and a student commons.

“The opening of Upper Iowa University in the Fiesta District is a huge addition to the area. Not only does it add prestige, but by re-using a privately owned vacant property, it helps to revitalize the entire area. UIU will act as an anchor for the continued redevelopment of the Fiesta District and I am thrilled that they are calling it their home in Mesa,” District 3 Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh said.
UIU’s partnership with the City will attract more students to the area, create new high paying jobs and increase the higher education offerings for the region’s residents.

“This new location is ideal for the UIU-Mesa Center,” UIU President William R. Duffy II said.  “It provides space for our current needs as well as our projected enrollment growth.  We look forward to working with the City of Mesa and restoring the vitality of the Fiesta District, while bringing quality education options to residents of the area.”

UIU, based in Fayette, Iowa, was founded in 1857 and is a private non-profit institution offering Associate, Bachelor of Science and Graduate degrees.  Mesa is the 19th U.S. location for a UIU education center and the first location west of the Rocky Mountains.

More information is available on the UIU website at www.uiu.edu.  Mesa Center can be contacted at (480) 834-4620 or barrigar@uiu.edu.
