Mesa Parks ‘Fun ‘n Fitness’ project receives $23,000 grant from Coca-Cola

Mesa, AZ – Coca-Cola of Arizona has awarded the Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Department with a $23,000 grant for their Fun ‘n Fitness Mobile Recreation Unit.

“The Fun ‘n Fitness program was started in 2009 and offers free after-school activities to children in Kindergarten through 6th grade,” Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Director, Marc Heirshberg said.  “The goal is to bring a mobile recreation center to children and provide them with activities and games that promote fitness, nutrition and of course, fun.  This grant will help us purchase equipment and materials we need to bring the program to underserved areas in Mesa.”

The Fun ‘n Fitness Mobile Recreation Unit operates two to three times a week during the months of October through May and brings free activities to local schools, neighborhood parks and community events.  The grant will go towards purchasing portable soft playground pieces, a portable obstacle course, sound equipment, and nutritional and marketing elements.

“Coca-Cola is committed to inspiring people to live active, healthy lifestyles,” Coca-Cola’s Vice President of Field Operations in Arizona, Kim Cioto said.  “Our partnership with Mesa and their Fun ‘n Fitness Mobile Recreation Unit brings all the activities and excitement directly to residents.  We’re excited to be working together making it even easier for everyone to get active in ways that are fun.”

“I want to thank Coca-Cola for their generous grant and supporting play in our community, Mesa Mayor, Scott Smith said. “Programs like these are vital to what makes Mesa a great place for our children.  I also want to thank our City employees for their continued effort in bringing quality programs for our children and families.  Without you, this would not have been possible.”

The Fun ‘n Fitness Mobile Recreation Unit will showcase their new equipment on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Riverview Park Grand Opening.
