Mesa's ABC program in need of donations

Mesa, AZ – The need is greater than ever for Mesa’s most vulnerable citizens.  The ABC:  A Better Community program needs donations for the holiday season and into the new year.  Donating before the end of the year allows you to take a charitable contribution donation on your 2013 tax return.
           
ABC:  A Better Community provides emergency food boxes, home delivered meals for seniors, shelter services to families and children, support services for the physically and developmentally challenged and other basic needs and services.  Non-profit agencies receiving funding from ABC are American Red Cross, Aid to Adoption of Special Kids (AASK), United Food Bank, Paz de Cristo, East Valley Adult Resources and Teen Lifeline.  For the 13/14 fiscal year, the City has allocated $108,000 in ABC grant money to the community.  During the first quarter, the ABC contributions, along with money from the City’s General Fund, provided 26,135 meals to Mesa residents; 44,512 emergency food boxes and 3,601 shelter nights to homeless individuals.
           
During the first quarter of the fiscal year, the American Red Cross in Mesa, Grand Canyon Chapter, responded to 11 residential fires; assisted 19 families, including 62 individuals; provided $15,602 in direct financial assistance to clients and had an average response time of 89 minutes.

Donating to ABC has never been easier.  City utility customers can contribute by automatically donating money with their monthly utility bill payment.  Visit www.mesaaz.gov, click on the “abc” tab and then click on the “secure online form” link.  You can also enroll by calling City of Mesa Customer Service at (480) 644-2221. This allows you to add a donation of five dollars per month or any amount of your choice.  You can also round up on the dollar on your utility bill or contribute a one-time amount.
           
If you are not a utility customer, you can still donate and claim the tax deduction.  Just send a check to City of Mesa Customer Service, P.O. Box 1466, Mesa, AZ  85211-1466 and write ABC:  A Better Community in the memo area.
