District 5 Councilmember David Luna has been appointed to the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Information Technology & Communications (ITC) Steering Committee for 2014. The appointment was announced by NLC President Chris Coleman, the Mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota.

The ITC Steering Committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving telecommunications and information systems (and public access to these systems), privacy concerns, cable TV, phone services, spectrum issues, communications tower siting, universal service, broadcasting, and defense of city rights-of-way from degradation caused by installation of communications facilities.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to represent Mesa on the ITC Steering Committee,” Councilmember Luna said. “I am very much looking forward to meeting with the other members of this committee and discussing new and innovative strategies that can benefit Mesa.”

“Councilmember Luna will be an excellent addition to this committee,” said District 3 Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh, who chaired the ITC Steering Committee in 2004. “I was one of the original members of this steering committee when it was formed in 1998 and in the 16 years of its existence very rarely has the committee had members with career experience in public access/educational television which is one of the policy areas covered by this committee. Councilmember Luna’s unique insight and experience will be an asset to committee deliberations.”

The National League of Cities is the nation’s largest and most prestigious organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, town and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
