Mesa, AZ – The City of Mesa just announced that escrow has officially closed for the purchase of the property for a fire station replacement site in west Mesa.  Funding for the land acquisition at the new fire station site was included in the General Obligation bond package approved by voters in November 2008.

Built in 1957, Station 203 is currently the oldest fire station in Mesa and is located west of Alma School Road on University Drive. Its age, location, and size make it inadequate to serve the needs of current fire operations. This phase of the project would include design and construction of the replacement station which will be on the west side of Alma School Road north of Broadway Road. The two-acre piece of land will host a station that will house a four-person fire/paramedic (advance life support) crew.

“This is one of the last projects that voters authorized in the 2008 bond package but it is a critical component of our public safety network which will improve the fire and medical service to west Mesa residents. It has been a time-consuming challenge to find the right location for the new Station 203 and I truly appreciate the efforts by all city staff to make this important project a reality,” District 3 Councilmember and Public Safety Committee Chair
Dennis Kavanaugh said.

“The relocation of Fire Station 203 will help meet the demand in the emergency call volume for medical and fire services in west Mesa and maximize our emergency response presence in the area,” Fire Chief Harry Beck said.  “Between the support of our citizens and the advocacy for their community by Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh, the Mayor and the other members of City Council, this long awaited, first step now comes to fruition.”

The architect contracted for Station 203 has been identified as Perlman Architects of Arizona. Ground-breaking and construction is expected to begin late spring of 2015.
