Mesa Parks and Recreation receives national accreditation

Mesa, AZ – Mesa is the 110th city in the nation and the fourth city in Arizona to receive national accreditation for its parks, programs and facilities. Awarded by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) is a rigorous process only given to towns and cities that meet the national benchmark in delivering high level, quality programs and facilities to the public.
“When I came on board nearly four years ago, one of my goals was to help put Mesa on the national stage,” Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Director Marc Heirshberg said. “Having this accreditation will keep us accountable in providing the best parks, programs, facilities, and staff for the residents of Mesa.”
The CAPRA accreditation was presented to District 1 Councilmember David Richins and Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Director, Marc Heirshberg this morning following a hearing of the CAPRA Commissioners at the NRPA Congress, in Houston, TX.
“Congratulations to our parks and recreation department on earning national accreditation” District 1 Councilmember Dave Richins said. “Mesa strives to provide our community with great facilities, parks, and playgrounds. Facilities like Mesa’s spring training stadiums, The Red Mountain Center, Convention Center, and Dobson Ranch Golf Course are recognized as regional leaders and are amenities of which our residents should be proud. Credit goes to the Mesa Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department for maintaining great quality, even during an economic downturn.”
A CARPA accreditation is a quality assurance and improvement process demonstrating the City’s commitment to its employees, residents, visitors and the community. Mesa joins Glendale, Scottsdale and Tucson as the only Arizona cities to receive this accreditation. The CARPA accreditation is a five-year cycle that includes a self-assessment report, on-site visitation and the Commission’s review and decision. Mesa will develop a new self-assessment report and be revisited every five years in order to keep their accreditation.
