Mesa, AZ – Cubs Park and Riverview Park are officially opening and the public is invited to be a part of this historic celebration!   Double Play at the Park is a free event to kick off the opening of Mesa’s new signature park and Chicago Cubs training complex.   Join us at the parks on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The grand opening celebration will include both self-guided and trolley tours of Cubs Park, the surrounding training complex and Riverview Park. Take a break from the tour to walk through the stadium and get your photo taken on the playing field.
Riverview Park will be open for kids to try out exciting new playground equipment including a huge climbing tower and bouldering wall. Throughout the event enjoy food, live music, inflatables, zip line, tethered hot air balloon rides, baseball themed activities and baseball card show. Arizona Game and Fish also will host free fishing.  The whole celebration will end with a special grand opening program at 5:45 p.m. at the lake.
Double Play at the Park will also feature tailgating from noon to 6 p.m.  It is your chance to get the best parking available while enjoying the sights and sounds of the celebration.  It is the only opportunity to “practice” tailgating before the Chicago Cubs spring training season!  Admission is $10 per vehicle (cash only) with all proceeds benefitting the Mesa HoHoKams, a volunteer organization which raises funds for local youth sports organizations.
Additional details about the event can be found online at
On Nov. 2, 2010 City of Mesa voters approved and authorized to expend funding to design and construct a City-owned baseball stadium, training and practice facility for the Chicago Cubs. The project also reconfigured Riverview Park that features an innovative playground, six acre lake and a new pedestrian path that connects the park and lake to the new stadium. Double Play at the Park celebrates the achievement of the community coming together and Building a Better Mesa.
