Mesa, AZ – In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the City of Mesa has renamed East 3rd Place to Martin Luther King Jr. Way, from North Center Street to North Centennial Way.  New signs have been placed, however the East 3rd Place signs will coexist with the new signs for one year.  The name change will not impact any residents or businesses.
“As we recognize Dr. King’s legacy with a street named in his honor, we also recognize how far we have come as Americans, as Arizonans and as humans,” District 4 Councilmember Chris Glover said.  “This street not only represents a movement that helped change the character of this country but also inspire the world.  I am truly honored to have Martin Luther King Jr. Way in downtown Mesa and District 4.”
Renaming this section of East 3rd Place to Martin Lutheran King Jr. Way came to fruition as a result of work initiated in late 2012 by the Mesa Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee.  The Committee selected this section of street because it is adjacent to the historic Washington/Escobedo neighborhood and is the starting point of the annual Martin Luther King Parade. It is also in the location of the first Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee meeting more than 20 years ago.
