Mesa, AZ – The City of Mesa Human Relations Advisory Board will host a three-part event entitled “Mesa Speaks, Mesa Listens: Community Conversations on Inclusion & Diversity.” In its ongoing commitment to combat prejudice and strengthen understanding among all parts of Mesa's diverse community, the Board invites Mesa residents and those who may have felt discrimination within Mesa city limits to participate in this constructive dialogue series.

At each dialogue, participants will meet in small groups to share their perspective and experiences on how inclusive, welcoming and equitable Mesa is as a community for its diverse population. These events are intended to increase the community's awareness, understanding and respect for the differences that make us unique human beings. Participants also will be asked to share ideas on how Mesa can be a more inclusive and equitable community. The public is encouraged to attend and openly express their views in a respectful environment. The focus of the discussions will be restricted to experiences that occur within Mesa.

The Human Relations Advisory Board will compile the data collected through these dialogues and the results of a recent Mesa Citizen Opinion Survey on diversity into a comprehensive report for the Mesa City Council.

“It is very important to the community that we value diversity,” Human Relations Advisory Board Chair Denise Heap said.  “It’s not just economics; it’s also the synergy that comes from having people with different backgrounds working together and relating together in a way that they are valued where you get different ideas and creativity.”

Participation in the dialogues is free. Three sessions are scheduled in different locations within Mesa to make participation convenient. The first of these facilitated dialogues will be held Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mesa Utilities Community Room, 640 N Mesa Drive.  Child care will be provided at this session.

Future dialogues will be as follows:

  • Tuesday, April 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Red Mountain Multigenerational Center, 7550 East Adobe

  • Tuesday, May 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Fiesta Fountains Conference Center, 1316 S Longmore, Ste. 102  Spanish translation will be provided at this session.
