Mesa, AZ – Citizen input will play a critical role in the City of Mesa’s efforts to develop a conceptual design for the City Center, or urban plaza, downtown. Residents are invited to provide ideas at design workshops on Wednesday, May 21 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Palo Verde Ballroom in Building B of the Mesa Convention Center, 263 N. Center St.
Funded through the approved 2012 parks bond, the City Center Design Concept will be the first step in the design and development of a distinctive place which will bring more activity to the downtown core and serve as a catalyst for high intensity redevelopment with a variety of uses. The City Center study area is bounded by Main Street, Center Street, 1st Street and Centennial Way.
To provide options for consideration, the City selected three design teams from a total of 18 local, national and international responses to a Request for Qualifications. During the workshops, residents will have the opportunity to provide input to each design team during 45 to 60 minute breakout sessions.
At the May 21 meetings, the three design teams will collect ideas for City Center, which will become the foundation of their design. Follow-up workshops on June 12 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Palo Verde Ballroom of the Mesa Convention Center will allow the design teams to present their understanding of the input received at the previous meetings and, to the extent possible, present preliminary design concepts.
