  • More than 1,600 Mesa volunteers participated in Make a Difference Day Oct. 25. Residents, businesses, church groups and City of Mesa employees were involved in 57 service projects such as alley cleanups, painting of walls and curb numbers, sign sweeps and park cleanups.   • The Mesa Historic Preservation Board is sponsoring a Historical Fiction Writing Contest for all 4th, 5th and 6th grade students living in the City of Mesa. The essay must be a fictional story with real and imaginary characters on the life and times of the Hohokam Indian Culture or Mesa Grande Park. The contest is open until Feb. 12.   • Plastic "coroplast" signs are not accepted in Mesa's blue recycle barrel. A drop-off site has been set up to allow Mesa residents to recycle these signs. Residents may stop by the Center Street Facility, 2412 N. Center St., Monday-Thursday 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Residents are asked to remove all wooden and metal stakes before placing the signs in the specially marked container which is located near the front entrance gate.
